Hey guys this is my first attempt at making a music video which i recorded live in sydney and then added a couple of loops of my stock footage.
This is Dyan Tai my Malaysian buddy studying in Sydney trying to break it into the music scene.
Playing right in the heart of Sydney’s underground music scene, The Roxbury Hotel. OK Productions presents aspiring Malaysian born musician Dyan Tai. The song “I’ll be the one, is Dyan’s debut song for his album set to release in mid june 2010.
Made in correspondence with OK Productions
This is my Video film assignment. There are many different readings you can make of it and I do not wish to give it just one.
Well this guys I guess you can say that I am moderately satisfied with this 1-minute experiment. I think if I had the time resources and energy I could have taken it a little bit further and of course the editing is occasionally spotty in my opinion I think I have successfully achieved what I set out to do which was to explore and manifest some sort of visualisation of the second cluster which my group chose. Anyway I am thoroughly looking forward to see where other groups are taking their work.
Till next time…

After a close reading your group’s chosen inspiration cluster, write a 500-800 word reflection on the concepts that inspired you. Feel free to do some extra research into a particular topic but make sure you leave plenty of room for your own ideas to develop. In your paper you should indicate your preliminary ideas for how these concepts might translate into your individual projects. Post your reflection on your blog under the category mdcm2003. You also need to hand in a paper copy in the assignment box.
I think a large part of the groups decision to go for the second cluster was that is conceptualization seemed more graspable. Key words such as perception, presence, awareness, cognition, experience, phenomena, illusion and reflection are themes which are universal and for me had more relevance to myself. This is in terms of identity and understanding of the world’s spaces and perceptions of reality.
It is something which can be explored and fleshed out easier than the other clusters. Due to the nature of the cluster I feel it is necessary to also use myself as a subject for inspiration. How I perceive, view, reflect and understand the world comes distinctly from a cluster of experiences from my own life.
“Perception is fundamentally characterized by experiences of fragmentation, shock and dispersal.” (Jonathan Cary “Suspensions of Perception, MIT Press: Cambridge Mass., 1999″) What I feel Cary is expressing is that our perception is not immune to distortion and is not always free from manipulation. In terms of translating this to video I will explore this idea through pastiche, collage and blending of certain images which seem to have a relation to each other. Capturing the manifestation of the perception of oneself in the context around them, but also the beauty in the phenomena of reflection and memory.
Understanding the self and experiencing life through memories in itself I believe a phenomena. The fact that the mind captures these fragmented events stores and interprets them through complex systems and signals of our mind is tribute to the bodies own phenomenal capability. It is that which seems to distinguish ourselves from other animals. This idea is complimented by Barry Blesser and Linda-Ruth Salter (Spaces Speak, MIT Press: Cambridge Mass2007) who note that “solely through sound, an entire environment, complete with memories and emotions, comes alive.”
Another way which I would like to explore the cluster is through the use of illusion and reflections of mirrors can be found at the link below
at this link you will learn about the invention of mirrors their function whereby its inception introduce major changes to the way we looked at the world and “by reflecting yourself it transformed your relationships. I would like to use this and envisage the use of large small square circular and miniscule mirrors to reflect the individual and how it impacts on our appreciation of the self. It draws us into a narcissistic vainness where attempt to alter the way we look till we are happy with the reflection. I think narcissism will be an underlying theme to perception in my video explorations.
I like the idea how mirrors allow us to perceive reality in a different way which is more 3rd person but ironically more real. The dimensions and alternate angles that the reflections of mirrors have can provide insight to the world which are more real than our own vision; Perhaps this is an idea which I can relate to Cary who says “Perception is primarily a way of indicating a subject definable in terms of more than the single-sense modality of sight,” which links to my earlier expressed ideas.
I intend my sequence to be a series of illusions of individuals, fascinated to the point of narcissism. I will include a combinational series of illusionary reflections where mirrors are acting as a third eye shifting our perspective to something with more depth and extending your eyesight. The mirror allows you a perspective which the ordinary eye does not allow particularly with light as well as is explored in the youtube link above.
Other visualizations of the cluster I’d like to explore how japanese horror films such as Ringu (1998 Hideo Nakata). In these types of films we notice how there is a great shift in terms of concepts of the self. I also feel its with mirrors and reflections we become beings of introspection (Which is traced to the renaissance period in classical art- see link above). With mirrors it is suggested that we see ourselves as separate to the other people around us, “A rise of individualism.”
Another idea I plan if I get time is to explore the different notions of perception traced to different cultures. I’d like to portray western individualism as brought by the reflection of a mirror whereas Eastern cultures place importance on functionality using mirrors not to look at oneself but rather gaze to one’s soul…
this is my long awaited video

Dear bloggers. I’m beginning my descent into the datasphere of code. And I like it. I hope my tutor don’t mind it
It felt so wrong, it felt so right
Don’t mean I’m in love tonight
I coded a code and I liked it
I liked it!

I am now worried though that Im getting my head into deep water as I cannot read and understand the codes weve been given fully.
After several discussions with other budding media goers, I’v decided to just take a step back and compare it to the earlier task with the “house of cards” assignment. I don’t want to rush but rather take the elements and key principals of design and the basic elements of code that were taught to us earlier and just apply them in the same way. The only issue is the aesthetics. I’m planning to take my own stills and scan my own images to eventually come up with a design that rings “unique”. I have decided on a rebel. She goes by the name “Queen of Quirk”, and I will be exaggerating several elements of her life so to enhance the sense of “rebel”. All in good fun though. And I’m sticking to the brief. Hopefully can get it don in the due time. For now got to go, If I am to make that dead line.
Till next time fellow bloggers, now to battle off Gillians solo presentations for media tomorrow. *crosses fingers and prays will be able to complete in time.
Well who would have thought that I could have accomplished the class assesment of making my own web page. Well readers if you don’t believe it you better and for evidence of my first attempt of the week six task file:///Volumes/MEDIA_STU/MakingMediaWeb/houseofcards/JeremyFEhyper/JeremyFEroom.html I decided to opt for Lara croft as my rebel. Mainly because she is one known to break the rules not for her own benefits but merely for her sheer enjoyment.
I enjoyed the challenge of putting the puzzles together, the challenge of the reading, the challenge of the comprehension of the code. Learning how we can link manipulate elements of the web was quite empowering, and gives you a sense of the endless possibilities that the internet offers us.
Personally I found the task inspiring as we learn the skills which we can actively enhance by learning new codes and the sharing of ideas and knowledge. By far the most exhilerating experience yet.
Saying that I have to end on a sad not with the results of my vox pop coming back. Not Happy, would be the best way to describe it. I managed to scrape through with just a credit, with many of the problems overlooked because i had demonstrated some effort.
Most of the problems that were with my vox pop were to do with the technical elements. I did n’t quite adhere to the project requirements and opted to do my own little spin which for future reference dont do that.
until we meet again.

So week four were starting to engage with conceps and notions of space and the fluid cyberspace that we can interact with by learning to read and understanding the coded languag of the Internet.
Before I go into further detail of this I would like to discuss the second video which i have uploaded here. It is my final draft for the film component assessment. I took the footage with my friend whose currently persuing an acting career. We decided that for the best effect for the project we would approach the box pop sequence spontaineously. I wanted natural honest responses so I did’n't give my people too much information as to what exactly I wanted to ask them. My first attempts were unsuccessful as people were a little confused about what my project was for and hence less co-operative. I think the key point to success in this task really involves the places you go and what time. Because when I took the footage people were having lunch they were more relaxed and more willing to be a part of my project.
Now the other thin which is probably important to discuss this week was the tutorial practical where we learnt to comprehend the nature of the internet’s architecture and how t conceptually tap into this cyberspace network.
Matt this week explained to us the layered nature of the internet and that by learning and becoming fluent in a particular coded language (which is involves a mixture of words and numbers) we can tap into gateways and interact and “surf” through the net. We do so by millions of addresses or IP codes which metaphorically act like a residential address and tell our computers where to go to get to a particular website. I found this weeks introduction to the coding excersizes really insightful, learning how the space of the internet can be manipulated to our own advantage by learnig the coding language. Also this very idea of an infinite space that can be built upon and interacted with when we enter particular codes. Well it was a first for me. Stay tuned for some more of my experiences learning to decode the internet.
Ok so the last two weeks involved the simple task of making a short two minute clip of ourselves talking about particular aspects of the media. As you probably noticed I have uploaded the clip onto my YouTube account and you can watch it on my previous post. I approached the task satirically and then edited it so as to make the clip more entertaining to watch. I think i achieved my desired effect so Im happy with that.

After doing some thinking and a bit of googling around I’v discovered that media and in particular blogging is something which over the last five years has become something quite a sensitive issue particularly in Asian countries. The issue being censorship and regulation of publishing has always been a controversy in Countries such as Malaysia, China and Indonesia. In these countries Japan included (http://www.danwei.org/blogs/blog_popularity_in_china.php) people are less open about their identity especially when it comes to blogging where expressing an opinion which is contradictory to mainstream or government values.
This leads me to much issue, to what extent should internet regulation be allowed. Is it in fact ethical for a government such as malaysia to in fact close down particular websites which publish stories and opinions which may not represent a particular country the way it wants too. For this reason I think today many young Australians take for granted the freedom we have and that the internet has allowed us. It i=has given us a voice. But that also brings me too another issue. Is there a line where we can cross the border with too much freedom. Iv read several peoples blogs who express there personal opinions which go beyond blogging, and eventually borderline reason. They can insight hate and anger between particular communities, and instead as acting as a platform to create discussion it has the opposite effect of making conflict. For these reasons, countries such as China and Japan have strict policies about what constitutes the “fair” blogging.
For this reason most bloggers adopt pseudonyms in order to keep their identities a secret. I find this relationship between falsities and truths intriguing. On one hand we want to speak out but at the same time we also want immunity. Do we sacrifice our identity in order to report or do we report in anonymity??? What would you do or how do you guys feel?
